Led by researchers from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, MD, the study reveals that if one spouse increases their physical activity, the other spouse is much more likely follow in their footsteps.
The team recently presented its findings at the American Heart Association's EPI/Lifestyle 2015 Scientific Sessions in Baltimore, MD.
The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, set by the US Department of Health and Human Services, recommend that adults engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity each week.
A 2012 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), however, found that less than half of adults in the US meet these physical activity recommendations.
But the researchers say their findings suggest a potentially effective way of increasing exercise levels for some adults: counseling married couples on health together, rather than separately.
"When it comes to physical fitness, the best peer pressure to get moving could be coming from the person who sits across from you at the breakfast table," says study co-author Laura Cobb, a doctoral student at Johns Hopkins.
"There's an epidemic of people in this country who don't get enough exercise," she continues, "and we should harness the power of the couple to ensure people are getting a healthy amount of physical activity."
Spouse 40-70% more likely to meet exercise recommendations if other spouse does
To reach their findings, Cobb and colleagues analyzed the medical records of 3,261 spouse pairs who were a part of the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study (ARIC), which began in 1987.
From 1987-89, the spouse pairs had two medical visits that were conducted approximately 6 years apart. At each visit, the physical activity levels of each spouse were recorded, and the team compared these with the recommendations set in the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans.
At the first visit, the team found that 33% of wives and 40% of husbands met physical activity recommendations.
On the second visit, however, a husband was 70% more likely to meet physical activity guidelines if his wife met the guidelines on the first visit, compared with husbands whose wives were less active.
In addition, a wife was 40% more likely to meet physical activity recommendations on the second visit if her husband met recommendations on the first visit.
Commenting on the team's findings, Cobb says:"We all know how important exercise is to staying healthy. This study tells us that one spouse could have a really positive impact on the other when it comes to staying fit and healthy for the long haul."
This research builds on the findings of a previous study reported by Medical News Today in January, which found individuals were more likely to make healthy lifestyle changes - such as quitting smoking, increasing exercise or losing weight - if their partner did.

A dog has been used to sniff out thyroid cancer in people who had not yet been diagnosed, US researchers say.
Tests on 34 patients showed an 88% success rate in finding tumours.
The team, presenting their findings at the annual meeting of the Endocrine Society, said the animal had an "unbelievable" sense of smell.
Cancer Research UK said using dogs would be impractical, but discovering the chemicals the dogs can smell could lead to new tests.
The thyroid is a gland in the neck that produces hormones to regulate metabolism.
Thyroid tumours are relatively rare and are normally diagnosed by testing hormone levels in the blood and by using a needle to extract cells for testing.
Smelly jobCancers are defective, out-of-control cells. They have their own unique chemistry and release "volatile organic compounds" into the body.
The canine approach relies on dogs having 10 times the number of smell receptors as people and being able to pick out the unique smells being released by cancers.
The man's best friend approach has already produced promising results in patients with bowel and lung cancers.
A team at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) had previously showed that a dog could be trained to smell the difference between urine samples of patients with and without thyroid cancer.
Frankie gave the correct diagnosis in 30 out of 34 cases
The next step was to see if it could be used as a diagnostic test.
Frankie the German Shepherd was trained to lie down when he could smell thyroid cancer in a sample and turn away if the urine was clean.
Thirty-four patients, who were going to hospital for conventional testing, took part in the trial.
Frankie gave the correct diagnosis in 30 out of 34 cases. There were two false positives and two patients who would have been incorrectly given the all-clear.
Dr Donald Bodenner, the chief of endocrine oncology at UAMS, said: "The capability of dogs to smell minute amounts is unbelievable.
"The medical community over the next few years is going to have a great appreciation [for them].
E-noseSome researchers are trying to strip out the canine-element and test for the unique pong of cancer with an "electronic nose".
This approach is also being trailed outside of cancer and has been used to find dangerous infections such as Clostridium difficile.
Dr Bodenner added: "We would like to know what Frankie is smelling, nobody knows."
Commenting on the findings Dr Jason Wexler, an endocrinologist in Washington, DC, argued: "This is a fascinating, interesting study and it has high potential in areas of the world that may not have access to biopsy techniques.
"There are many patients who are reluctant to undergo fine needle aspiration so I think that if you could design a technique where you have no invasive procedure that can have tremendous widespread appeal."
But Dr Emma Smith, from Cancer Research UK, cautioned: "Although there's some evidence that some trained dogs can sniff out the smelly molecules given off by cancers, there have been mixed results on how accurate they are and it's not really practical to think about using dogs on a wide scale to detect the disease.
"But carrying out lab tests to understand what the dogs are smelling might help to inform the development of 'electronic noses' to detect the same molecules, which could lead to better diagnostic tests in the future."
Dr Bodenner says it is an approach that he is actively pursuing.
Meanwhile, the lab is also trying to find a new home for canine-veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan.
Instead of sniffing out bombs, they will be trained to hunt for cancer.

The researchers also identified differences between how men and women learn about sex and relationships. The two studies, published in BMJ Open, utilized data from the third National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles (Natsal-3) - the largest scientific study of its kind in the UK.
"The terrain young people have to navigate as they are growing up has changed considerably over the past 20 years and it will inevitably continue to do so," says study author Dr. Clare Tanton. "This means that while we need a more structured approach towards sex and relationships education, we must also be able to adapt to these changing needs."
In one of the two studies, data from Natsal-3 for 3,869 participants, conducted between 2010 and 2012, was compared with data from surveys conducted in 1990-1991 and 1999-2001, in order to assess how sources of information about sex may have changed over time.
The second study set out to examine variation in the sources of information about sex by sociodemographic factors for 3,408 participants of Natsal-3 and to see if there were any associations between these and sexual behaviors and outcomes. All participants involved in the studies were between 16 and 24 years of age.
The researchers found that, when growing up, the main source of information about sexual matters is now the school. In 1990, 28% of the participants reported that it was their main source of information, but this proportion rose by 2012 to 40%.
Many differences were observed between males and females for other information sources. Males were more likely to receive most of their information from their first sexual partner (12% of males vs. 5% of females), while females more frequently reported that their mothers were their primary source of information (4% of males vs. 14% of females).
Overall, parents were the main source of information for only 7% of males and 14% of females. Even fewer received the bulk of their information from health professionals (1% of men and 3% of women).
'A broader framing of sex education in schools is required'
In contrast, around half of the participants of both genders reported obtaining the bulk of their information from "other sources" - sources deemed to be less authoritative, such as siblings, media, the Internet and pornography.
These findings conflict with what the young people participating in the study wanted, however. "When asked for their preferred source of additional information, young people most commonly reported school, followed by parents, and health professionals," study author Wendy Macdowall states.
The authors acknowledge that a consequence of assessing the one main source of information regarding sex is that "the nuances of learning about sexual matters from multiple sources are lost."
Participants who mainly learned about sex and relationships through school reported experiencing sexual intercourse for the first time at a later date than participants who obtained most of their information from "other sources." In addition, they were less likely to report unsafe sex or sexually transmitted infection (STI).
Receiving information through school was also associated among females with being less likely to feel distressed about sex or to experience sex against their will. This association was not observed among males, however.
The researchers also found that the information the participants had received was not the type of information that they wanted to have received. Around 70% of participants in the study reported feeling they "ought to have known more" when they first felt ready for sex.
In particular, they reported wanting more information on "sexual feelings, emotions and relationships," in addition to STIs. Females also reported wishing they'd known more about forms of contraception.
"Our results suggest we need a broader framing of sex education in schools that addresses the needs of both young men and women, with a move away from the traditional female-focused 'periods, pills and pregnancy' approach," says Macdowall.
"The fact that many young people told us they wanted to get more information from a parent shows that parents also have an important role to play," concludes Dr. Tanton. "There needs to be a combined approach which also supports parents to help them take an active role in teaching their children about sex and wider relationship issues."
A study published earlier this year demonstrated the risks of obtaining information through "other sources" - teens were found to be influenced by misconceptions of their peers, often overestimating how much sex they were having.
